1950, the year in which large multinationals and laboratories began to use and produce PFCs, the year in which the environment and sustainability lost a battle.PFCs, or Perfluorocarbons, are man-made chemicals that have a particularly negative impact on the environment.
They are used in a number of industrial applications such as refrigeration and fire extinguishers, but were (and unfortunately still are in some cases) widely used in the textile sector. Why the use and subsequent disuse of PFCsPerfluorocarbons were, like other human inventions of the time, a breakthrough in terms of process efficiency and effectiveness of the objects to which they were applied. PFCs are highly water, oil and dirt repellent, but all that glitters is not gold. All the production processes, and cleaning at the end of their useful life, make PFCs a danger to people and the environment, as this chemical accumulates in living tissues and becomes potentially carcinogenic. For this reason, they have been found in animals such as dolphins, in the livers of polar bears, and even in human blood, which is why the European Union has been fighting against their use since the mid-1990s. At the time, the European target was to reduce PFC emissions from European industry by 10 % below the 1995 emission baseline year by 2010.
The PFC emission reductions shown above were achieved through the aggressive implementation of process optimization and more efficient alternative processes, and the use of alternative chemicals. The industry remains dedicated to managing its PFC emissions and continues to reduce them. What has aquaclean done to avoid PFCs? Due to the initiative proposed by the European Union to further reduce the use of PFCs, and in addition to various actions taken by Greenpeace, alternatives to PFCs began to be studied and produced for use in the market. aquaclean joined this initiative to give a better world to our legacy, future generations. Therefore, we ourselves have found alternatives to the use of PFCs in our fabrics, and we have managed to give the yarns of our fabrics a repellent capacity without affecting either health or the environment.
At aquaclean we are responsible and we have a commitment. A commitment to the planet in order to leave a better place to live for future generations, that is why, as part of our sustainability policy and following the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), we have decided to act by reducing, reusing and recycling, incorporating them in all the design and manufacturing processes of our fabrics. To improve our future, and that of all those who come after us.
